HMJ- Last Week Before School

  • In my life this week…

This week I have spent a lot of time organizing in an effort to get ready for the start of our school year. I have also gathered some more books to do reviews as well as just for my own personal reading.

Danger Girl decided to join the team in Tae Kwan Do, so I have also been helping her practice forms this week. We will have to see how this works out.

  • In our homeschool this week…

This week we have done some review for math and reading. I wanted to get an idea of how much Danger Girl retained in math over the summer before we get back into the groove. I also wanted to determine how she is doing with her reading so I know what we need to work on there. I think we will actually be ready to start next week.

I was also contacted by a very sweet homeschool mom, who has offered to send us the science curriculum I had originally wanted, so I am excited about that.

  • Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…

Remember when plan A does not work out, there are 25 more letters in the alphabet. (I saw this on a Facebook post, but I couldn’t tell you where it originated)

Also, there is not just 1 right way to do things. Just because someone else is using a particular method or curriculum does not make that the right way to do things. There are tons of resources available now, but remember not so long ago people began homeschooling their children without all the resources, and they managed. You will too!

  • I am inspired by…

There are so many moms (and dads) out there that are more than willing to offer advice and support. I love how encouraging many other homeschoolers can be.

  • Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

Danger Girl has decided she wants to have a picnic and go swimming as a last day of summer break party this weekend. It will be just the family, but I loved the idea and was more than willing to go along with it.

  • My favorite thing this week was…

The offer we received for the science curriculum was my favorite thing this week. (This goes back to the supportive network of homeschooling parents).

Another thing I loved this week was the great words of encouragement I received from a couple of people regarding my book.

  • What’s working/not working for us…

Not turning the TV on during the week has been a great change for our family. Danger Girl is much more willing to do more productive activities during the day when she knows she is not going to have television.

  • Questions/thoughts I have…

I have been doing a lot of research on how diet affects behavior and thinking lately. I wonder has anyone done special diets with their children? If you have, have you noticed a difference?

Another question I have is how to make my twitter button look the way it’s supposed to? I can’t seem to get the button to show up, just my twitter name and parts of the code. Anyone have any suggestions?

  • Things I’m working on…

I have mainly been working on organization. I am still not all unpacked since we moved, and this disorganization drives me crazy. I have to get my husband to build some more shelves before I can go any further though.

I am also working on gathering recipes for freezer meals. With us trying to save money as well as eat healthier, I figure this would be a great alternative to eating out or buying pre-packaged freezer food.

  • I’m reading…

Danger Girl has decided she wants to read the Enchanted Forest Chronicles again, so we are reading these together.

I am still reading “The Total Woman” by Marabel Morgan. I am doing this is a devotional with a friend of mine.

I am also reading “Wrecked” by Jeff Goins. I have really just started this book, but I already like it. He currently has a personal goal of beating Shades of Grey for #1 book on amazon, so go buy his book and help him out :). If you do want to get this book on Kindle for 0.99 you should buy it today (Friday) though because tomorrow it goes back up to full price.

I am also reading “False Memory” by Dean Koontz. I haven’t really gotten far as I have been distracted by other books I am reviewing lately.

  • I’m cooking…

I plan on doing some freezer meals. Lasagna and King Ranch Casserole are two of my meals I plan to do. I am also planning on pre-making some home-made pizzas and seeing how well they will freeze.

  • I’m grateful for…

The abundance that I have is a great blessing. It is easy to get caught up on what I don’t have that I want, but I look around and realize I have more than many people in this world. Realizing this makes me re-evaluate my discontentment and realize I have what I need.

  • I’m praying for…

I am still praying to make the right decision regarding a family situation. It is a hard decision, and if things go this way it could also be expensive, so there are many things to consider.

  • A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

  1. I have come to the same realization about discontentment. Compared to most of the rest of the world, I am rich. If I focus on my blessings instead of what I don’t have, I am happy and grateful.

At 2:1 Conference, I heard Rachel Martin say, “Comparison is the death of contentment.” It’s true!

What are your thoughts?
