Your Blog Has Potential
Creating a website is one of the easiest ways to stay connected with your customers/audience and share your expertise. This is a great benefit to anyone wanting to sell products or services, but websites/blogs have another benefit.
Even if you don’t have a product or service to sell, you have the potential to make money with your website. There are many ways to monetize a blog to make money while sharing your knowledge with the world.
Blogs are generally used to share some knowledge with anyone interested, and this includes sharing products you believe in with your audience. This opens potential for one monetization option, affiliate marketing. But, before you can move into monetizing your blog, you have to determine what area of interest (niche) you want to share with the world.
(Disclaimer: This post may contain affiliate links. I will not share any company/product I do not trust and use myself)
What Should I Write?
The quick answer to what you should write is to determine what you are most passionate about. Determining what to write about is a great chance to use the Journaling for Entrepreneurs process; dust off your journals and process your ideas.
- What topics do you find most interesting?
- What’s something you always talk about?
- What areas do you have expertise in?
Write down all the answers that come to you. Once you have your list, go through and see if you find any patterns or trends. Are there any ideas that work together? Is there a background idea that comes up more than others?
Look at how you might be able to combine ideas to create your niche. Once you have an idea of your niche, take some time to see if you can generate a couple ideas for articles or videos for that topic.
If you can’t think of several post ideas, this may not be the niche for you. If you can, great, you have your niche.
10 Popular Topics
This is all well and good, but you may be wondering what topics get the most traffic online. This is definitely something to take into consideration, though don’t feel like you have to pick a topic solely on popularity of searches.
If you do want to take popular searches into consideration, let’s take a look at 10 blogging topics that get a lot of love.
Note: yes, the more popular ones will be saturated, but you can find your own spin to make you stand out in the crowd.
Lifestyle

A lifestyle blog is one of the most versatile options. This can act as almost a personal journal, sharing your general interests with the world. This type of blog is more about your personality and interests, seeking to reach people with similar interests.
This option also gives more freedom for monetization, especially with affiliate marketing. You will want to have a niche, focusing on specific topics within your interests, but you can become an affiliate for products you like within each of those topics of interest.
It’s important to remember you want to be organized with a lifestyle blog. While I compared it to a personal journal, that’s not really all it’s about.
Have specific days you blog about specific topics, or have your topics organized on different pages. Make sure you make it easy for people to get an idea of what you will be sharing with them.
Some popular lifestyle blogs include:
Home & Garden

This is just what it sounds like, sharing information about how to take care of your home and garden. This topic can also be versatile, as there are many ideas that go along with taking care of your home and garden.
If you have special tricks you have honed over the years or just like to talk about how to take care of your home and/or garden, this is the blog topic for you. You can include panning ideas, how-tos, organization tricks, you name it.
Once again, you want to be organized in how you present your topics, but you have some wriggle room with this topic.
You do want to try to have some basic topics that you cover, but if you want to throw out a tip every once in a while, that doesn’t fall under one of your specific topics, you can get away with it more easily.
Some popular home and garden blogs include:
Fashion & Beauty

A fashion and/or beauty blog is going to focus more on pictures than some of the other topics. This type of blog really has to be visually appealing to catch your audience’s attention.
If you love fashion, makeup, hair care, or any other beauty topic this is the place to share your favorite products (once again a chance for affiliate marketing), share your tips and tricks, or just talk about what you like and don’t like in the fashion world.
This is a great option for a vlog as well, especially as this is a more visual topic. Sharing videos of your tips and tricks is a great way to grab people’s attention.
Some popular Fashion & Beauty blogs:
Food
Food blogs are usually about sharing recipes or kitchen secrets, something moms all over the world are searching for. Food blogs are also another great option for using the video medium, as people love to watch a recipe being created.
If you are a foodie or have honed secrets for simplifying the cooking process, this is a great option for you. This is also a good option if you have a love of kitchen gadgets (this would have been a great option for my mother-in-law).
Popular food blogs include:
Health & Fitness
There is a large portion of people looking for health and fitness tips. One of the most common resolutions is to lose weight and get healthier. This is also a good option for people with natural health backgrounds as this is a growing industry.
This is a good option for people who have worked in the health industry, for someone who has succeeded in their own health journey, or even someone starting out on their own health journey.
Health and fitness can encompass healthy eating habits, nutrition facts, work-out options, herbal remedies, etc.
If your focus is on fitness, you also have options for creating how-to videos, adding one more medium to your attention-grabbing material.
Popular health & fitness blogs include:
Parenting

Anyone who has ever had children knows parents welcome all the advice they can get. Even better, parents welcome humor and parent fail stories, making this a somewhat versatile topic.
You can share parenting tips and tricks, share humorous stories about your children (protecting their identity of course), share parenting fails and lessons learned, share favorite activities, you get the idea.
Another great thing about parenting blogs is they can grow with your experience. You can start out with the pregnancy journey and take your audience through the milestones.
One fairly popular sub-niche in parenting is homeschooling. Homeschooling is becoming more popular, and homeschoolers love connecting with other homeschoolers and getting new ideas for curriculum or activities.
Popular parenting blogs include:
Travel
If you love to travel, chances are you have some great stories to share and probably some travelling tips you can pass along to others. A travel blog is also a great option to try out your photography skills, as people love seeing pictures of places that are worth seeing.
This can be a travel log, a place to share tips and tricks, a top places to see blog, or a combination of the three. This is also a great option if you like to share a little more of your personal story. People love to hear your personal experience in different places.
You can also rank the places you visit to help people when they’re choosing where to go themselves.
Popular travel blogs include:
Personal Finance

While people may not like to talk finances, plenty of people are looking for help in getting their personal finances in order. If you have a background in finance or have personal experience, this is the place to share your expertise.
You can share your personal story, share saving tips, loan tips, tax tips, you name it. While it’s not as glamorous as other topics, personal finance is an important topic.
I’m also including the how-to start working from home blogs in this category.
If you can find a way to share your tips in an entertaining or easy to follow manner, you can grow a following.
Popular personal finance blogs include:
Book Blogger
If you love to read and have strong opinions about the books you read, you might just be a book blogger. Obviously reviews of books are a big part of this, but you can also get involved with virtual book tours, sharing upcoming releases with your readers.
Authors love book bloggers because they are a great resource for getting their books noticed. You can work with authors and publishers to do give-aways as well, which is a great way to build your audience.
Popular book blogs include:
Arts & Crafts
Do you have a craft you love, such as quilting, sewing, knitting, etc.? If you love to spend your days elbows deep in arts and crafts materials, you may be ready to share your love with the world.
You can share projects you are working on, share tips, share trends in your favorite crafts, or share stories of your crafting experience.
You can pick your favorite crafts, or make the blog more general, discussing the different arts and crafts options. You can also have it dedicated to adult or children crafts, or you can have sections for both.
If you love crafting projects, this is a great way to connect with other craft lovers and share your expertise.
Popular arts and crafts blogs include:
These are not the only options out there, but this is a good start to help you organize your options and ideas.
